I had a really good Halloween this year. I got to spend the weekend with my friends, dress up, go out, and just have fun. At some point we started talking about how the next time Halloween falls on a Saturday won’t be for another seven years. We started joking about how old we’d be, where we’d live, and what we’d be doing. It was a funny conversation, but it got me thinking more than I expected.
Seven years from now, I’ll be 27. It’s crazy to think about how much my life has changed and how much it’s going to change again. Graduation is getting closer, and I’m starting to realize that I’ll eventually be on my own without school giving me some kind of structure or safety net. I’m excited about the possibilities but honestly, I’m mostly nervous.
I think we spend so much time worrying about what’s coming next that we forget we’re currently living through a time we’ll probably miss someday. We get so caught up in wanting to graduate, get a job, move out, and have everything figured out that we forget to appreciate the in-between.
Maybe growing up isn’t about suddenly knowing what you’re doing. Maybe it’s about learning to be okay with not knowing. You don’t need to have the next seven years planned out, and you certainly don’t need to have your entire life figured out by graduation. Sometimes you just have to let things happen and trust yourself enough to figure them out along the way.
Pro Tip: Stop treating your current life like a waiting room for the next chapter. Take the pictures, make the memories, go out with your friends, and enjoy where you are. One day, you’ll probably wish you could go back to a moment you’re currently rushing through.
