Giving Back

Recently, I have been volunteering with Champlain Valley Trails, helping clean up and maintain trails around the Adirondacks. Most days involve clearing branches, cutting down trees that have fallen across paths, picking up debris, and making sure the trails are safe and accessible. It is definitely more physical work than I expected, but I have actually really enjoyed it.

I have always loved hiking and being outside, so volunteering in a place that I already enjoy spending time in feels especially meaningful. There is something satisfying about walking through a trail and knowing that you helped make it better for the next person who uses it. It has also made me think more about how much work goes into maintaining the places we often take for granted.

As I have gotten older, I have started to realize that being an adult is not just about working, paying bills, and figuring out what you want to do with your life. It is also about becoming part of a community and finding ways to contribute to it. Volunteering has been a good reminder that even small things can make a difference. I also think there is something really nice about doing work that does not involve a screen. Spending a few hours outside, getting dirty, and physically seeing what you accomplished feels different from a normal day of school or work. It gives me time to slow down and appreciate where I live.

Pro Tip: If you want to start volunteering but don’t know where to begin, look for something connected to an interest you already have. You’re much more likely to enjoy it and actually stick with it.
